Many of us have been saying this for years, statewide background checks are not adequate. A recent news story about the Texas Department of Public Safety’s (DPS) criminal history database sheds light on holes in its system. “The DPS criminal database does not include Class C misdemeanors,” said DPS spokesperson Tela Mange. Public intoxication is among those crimes punishable by a fine instead of jail time. Weslaco police chief David Molina said there are hundreds of such offenses, including property damage, possession of marijuana or drug paraphernalia and minor theft, that don’t carry strict penalties.
Teachers are one of the many types of employees run through this type of system, saving money on your background checks can cost you your reputation down the road!
