Winston-Salem, NC — The city of Winston-Salem is proposing new rules for its taxi drivers, ranging from criminal background checks to requiring city inspections of vehicles.

The issue arose when a taxi driver applied for renewal of his license and court records showed he had been charged 86 times since 1991, mostly for traffic violations.

Prosecutors dropped about two-thirds of the charges. The City Council allowed the renewal, but asked for an update of taxi regulations.

Assistant City Manager Greg Turner presented a study to council members last week after studying what other cities did.
