Wall Street Journal on Background Checks

by Jason Morris

For some reason the Wall Street Journal re-printed an article I was quoted in a few years ago.  The article was originally published in August of 2005 before we changed our company name. The article focuses on the verification aspect of background screening.  The interview was conducted while I was Co-Chairman of the National Association of Professional Background Screeners (NAPBS®).

Application Asks for Your Salary, But Is It Better to List a Range?

Originally published August 15, 2005

Question: I’m considering applying for a job that requires my salary history and requirements upon application. Do I “give away the store” before getting my foot in the door? And if I do apply, should I be exact, or can I give a range?

Background Screening Book Released with Chapter from employeescreenIQ

by Nick Fishman

One of our favorites, W. Barry Nixon from The National Institute For The Prevention of Workplace Violence  contacted Jason Morris and I about a year ago and asked if we would be interested in writing a chapter about International Background Checks for a book he intended to publish for those interested in learning how to manage hiring risks.  Together Jason and I collaborated with Les Rosen and Michael Damm to describe a process that at best had been sparsely addressed in the past.

The book entitled “Background Screening and Investigations: Managing Hiring Risk from the HR and Security Perspectives” was recently released and contains expert content from the most respected people in the screening industry today.  Those who deal with background checks in both HR and security can greatly benefit from this advanced level guide to mitigating hiring risk.

We are very proud to be included and think that interested readers can definitely benefit from our collective insights.

If you are interested in purchasing this book, it is available on Amazon.com now.

employeescreenIQ goes “Above and Beyond”

by Kevin Bachman

I had the honor of representing employeescreenIQ at the 2008 Annual Employer Recognition Dinner in Columbus, Ohio Saturday night. We were chosen as one of the premier companies by The Ohio Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve and I was proud to accept the award on behalf of all our military employees.

We received the “Chairman’s Above and Beyond Award” because our policies accomodating our National Guard and Reserve employees far exceed our legal obligations. Thousands of servicemen and women across the state nominated their employers for this award. 753 companies in all. This organization, over the course of several months, whittled those nominations down to 23 winners.

It was a proud, formal affair attended by about 300 people, complete with a military band and a flag presentation. Men and women in uniform sought me out (and other winners) to personally thank us for our efforts. To be honest, I was a little awstruck. Many in the audience have seen combat recently. Compared to the comittment and sacrifice of these soliders, our contributions seem so insignificant. But I was repeatedly told I was wrong. I saw how appreciative these officers were toward employers who made their lives and their families’ just a little easier. It made me recognize we can all contibute, even if we don’t wear a uniform.

employeescreenIQ Launches employeescreen University

by Nick Fishman

employeescreenIQ is very proud to announce the launch of employeescreen University, a first-of-its-kind online, educational learning resource for human resource, security and risk-management professionals, which features regularly updated, free background-screening information aimed to help organizations make better hiring decisions.

We have been working diligently on this concept for some time now and hope you will take advantage of this free resource. We felt and continue to feel that there is so much misinformation out there about what constitutes an effective background check and how to establish a program that works for each individual organization. employeescreen University is all about educating the marketplace and empowering interested individuals with the information they need to develop an effective screening program. We also welcome your feedback and will tailor the site based on the comments and requests we see.

IQ Philanthropy Committee Makes a Difference

by Jason Morris

The employeescreenIQ philanthropy committee was excited to announce they have dropped off over 300 pounds of food to the Cleveland Food Bank.

The philanthropy committee wanted to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving. Hopefully this experience will make all of us appreciate the good food and family that surround us during the Thanksgiving holiday.

Lauren Keeper, committee co-chair was excited the group was able to donate so much to the food bank. Taking time off from conducting background checks to help those in need was just one step the committee is taking to help others.
