Dupe the Drug Test? I Don’t Think So!

by Natalie Beck

Cheating a drug test is going to become more and more difficult in the future.  People in charge of collecting the specimen are catching cheaters red handed.   Those performing the actual testing of the specimen know what to look out for should something sneak by the collector. Lawsuits are being filed against companies who sell devices aimed to help people beat tests.  People see drug test cheating as a growing problem and are doing what they can to combat it from all angles.

I’ve got not one, but two stories to share with our readers today about this very subject.  First, we have the cheater that was caught red handed.

Man Tries To Beat Drug Test

Associated Press - October 15, 2008
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - A Tampa man was arrested after authorities say he tried to beat a drug test at his probation office by smuggling in someone else’s urine.

Court records show that 21-year-old Michael Frazier is on probation until 2010 for charges of felony forgery and grand theft. After he was discovered with an elastic tube containing urine Monday, he was charged with fraudulent urine testing. The new charge is a first-degree misdemeanor, punishable by up to a year in prison.

He was being held without bail.

Yeah, that probably wasn’t the best idea, was it?

The second talks about pending litigation against the makers of the more popular products available to help people beat drug tests.

Buchanan Takes On Drug-Test Cheaters

By Jason Cato, Tribune-Review - October 15, 2008

Federal prosecutors in Pittsburgh are taking aim at a contraption designed to help people beat workplace drug tests.

U.S. Attorney Mary Beth Buchanan’s office filed criminal charges Tuesday against Gerald W. Wills and Robert Dennis Catalano, and their Signal Hill, Calif., company Puck Technology Inc.

Prosecutors contend the men defrauded the government and conspired to sell drug paraphernalia by hawking products called the “Whizzinator” and “Number 1.”

More drug tests, fewer jobs filled

by Natalie Beck

More and more employers are including both pre-employment and random drug testing as part of their hiring procedure and company policy. As a few companies have learned, this is a VERY good idea as they are now finding many of their prospective employees are testing positive for a variety of illegal drugs. As a person who has been working closely with employeescreenIQ’s client base over the past few years with regards to their drug testing programs, I cannot begin to describe the stories I have heard and what a great idea it is for employers to drug test their employees and potential employees. What you find may surprise you!

Study: Meth use in the workplace declines

by Jason Morris

I found this article while reading USA Today and felt it might be important to our readers.  Although this has little to do with employment screening and more to do with substance abuse testing its always interesting to show these types of studies.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Methamphetamine use continued to decline in nearly every part of the country last year as the government sharpened its crackdown on precursor chemicals used to make the illegal drug.

Overall, the number of workplace employees who tested positive for meth dropped 22% last year, according to a study released Wednesday by New Jersey-based Quest Diagnostics Inc., the nation’s largest drug-testing company. Meth use in the Northeast, however, remained steady.
